Presentation skills

Tuesday, 15 October 2019

Facilitator: Dr Harriet Dismore, Educational Developer, Plymouth University

For many people, giving a presentation can seem a daunting task. Yet presentations skills are useful in a range of situations, including seminars, teaching and conferences such as the SRHE Newer Researchers Conference. This course aims to provide opportunities for you to develop and improve your presentation skills within a friendly and supportive environment. It will do this via a series of activities, providing you with individual attention as well as enabling you to work in small groups on constructive feedback. Throughout the session we will also share tips and strategies to help you gain confidence and offer personalised guidance based on informal feedback and video footage.

You must come prepared to give a 10 minutes presentation, either verbally and/or using aids such as Powerpoint or a flipchart. It is essential that you come prepared for this so that everyone has the chance to provide effective and constructive feedback.

Aim

The aim is to provide newer researchers with the opportunity to develop and hone their presentation skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

Objectives

It will do this by:

  •          Ensuring each participant presents to the group and receives feedback, including video footage
  •         Providing guidance on managing presentation situations, such as time management, interacting with the audience and use of visual aids
  •          Offering participants the opportunity to respond to feedback and plan for future events
