The Doctoral Research Experience – Enhancers and Inhibitors of Progress

Friday, 17 May 2019

Presenter: Shane Dowle, RHUL/University of Surrey

This interactive workshop will:

Participants:
·         enable doctoral researchers to use a special tool to reflect on their own progress and how they might improve it;
·         enable supervisors to reflect on good practice for supporting their researchers to timely completion;
·         inform participants about a piece of recent research in the area of doctoral completions;
·         enable them to contribute to the study’s conclusions.

Outline

This workshop is based on active participation and the sharing of experiences in groups with a view to helping participants to learn from each other about what facilitates and what delays progress during the doctorate while also contributing to research on timely completion. Participants will be provided in advance with instructions about how to produce a visual outline of their own doctoral experience with particular aspects highlighted. This should be completed before the workshop for sharing within it on the day to establish common themes and individual differences of perspective.

Following this groupwork there will be a presentation of the main themes that have emerged from the presenter’s research on this topic. The presentation will produce questions for further discussion in groups and a plenary digest of what helps and hinders doctoral progress so that the former can be actively sought or nurtured while the latter can be compensated for or avoided.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will have the option of contributing to the presenter’s PhD research into doctoral completions. Information packs will be provided on registration.

We would like to encourage the attendance of both doctoral students and supervisors who have had positive experiences, at least so far, regarding progress with PhD projects, as much as those who have encountered difficulties so that a balance of experiences can be considered. The workshop is open to all supervisors and doctoral students though those with at least a year’s experience in either role may find it most beneficial.
