HECU9 Contemporary Higher Education: Close Up Research in times of change

15-16 Nov 2018

About the Conference

Higher Education Close-Up is a peer reviewed biennial international conference, focused on issues relating to in-depth research into higher education. This year we celebrate 20 years of HECU, since the first HECU conference in 1998! HECU9 takes place at the Vineyard Hotel in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa from 15-16 November 2018. It follows on from the successful HECU8, held in Lancaster in July 2016. Higher Education Close Up is a virtual network of the Society For Research into Higher Education.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Penny Jane Burke, Dr Tristan McCowan and Professor Aslam Fataar have agreed to present keynote presentations at the conference.

For those coming from further afield, you might be interested in combining your trip to HECU9 with the HELTASA 2018 conference, Dancing on the waves of change, from 20-23 November 2018 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. There is also the Pathways in Higher Education conference in Cape Town from 19-20 November. This latter conference is free to attend, although paper submissions are closed (contact Sherran Clarence for more information on this).

Conference Theme

The theme for HECU9 is “Contemporary Higher Education: Close-up research in times of change”.

In the past 20 years since the first HECU conference, the higher education landscape has changed dramatically, and the theme for HECU9 gives an opportunity to reflect on these changes, and on the ones that continue to shape and challenge our thinking about the field. Close-up research is distinguished by a “fine-grained” approach, in the sense that it reveals a detailed picture of an area rather than presenting information which is more comprehensive, less nuanced, but drawn from a wider social field. Each of the keynote speakers has provided a think piece, which raises questions about different aspects of this theme. We ask that conference participants submit proposals for papers that in some way respond to these questions so that an interactive conversation can develop before, during and, we hope, after the conference.

The Call for Proposals outlines this process in more detail
