The island student experience: Access to higher education on islands

18 November, Birmingham

What is different about being a higher education student on a small island? What are the challenges, rewards and future priorities for those involved in providing higher education opportunities for students on islands with relationships to the UK? And what do these unusual contexts reveal about issues of access, mobility and student experience that might go unnoticed in more traditional higher education environments?

Join Dr. Holly Henderson, University of Nottingham and Professor Ann-Marie Bathmaker, University of Birmingham, for this event reporting the findings of a project that explores these questions, funded by the Society for Research into Higher Education. As well as learning about the project, you will have the opportunity to hear from practitioners and researchers working in different island contexts, to ask questions, to create new networks and to strengthen existing ones.

The event has been scheduled for the 18th November, to precede the Association of Colleges Annual Conference, which will be held in Birmingham on the 19th-21st November. We are very grateful to Mike Hopkins, Principal of South and City College Birmingham, for allowing us to hold this event at the Birmingham city centre site of the college, which is easy to get to from Birmingham New Street and Moor Street train station, as well as from Birmingham International Airport
