About the role:

Anglia Ruskin University is inviting applications for 2 PhD studentships in the area of Learning Gain, with registration starting in Semester 2 2017-18 (February 2018). These fully funded studentships will be for three years, available for full-time Home/EU students only and will comprise a stipend and a fee waiver. 


You will be joining the team within our recently established Centre for Innovation in Higher Education in Cambridge, which includes experienced academic researchers and doctoral students working in the fields of Pedagogic Research in Higher Education and Learning Gain. You'll also become a member of the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education doctoral student research community. The projects will be supervised by academics from Anglia Learning and Teaching and as well as from the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education. Administration of the studentships will be based in the Doctoral School, which provides a full programme of doctoral student training.


The proposed projects will relate to an area of Learning Gain that will have a significant impact on student learning and educational outcomes at ARU, as well as addressing the benefits of higher education across the sector nationally and internationally. HEFCE defines Learning Gain as “the improvement in knowledge, skills, work-readiness and personal development made by students during their time spent in higher education.” There is a strategically important interest across the university and HE sector in the area of Learning Gain, with the University being a partner in two HEFCE funded projects – the National Mixed Methodology Learning Gain Project, and the Catalyst funded project: SCALING UP Active Collaborative Learning for Student Success; so you will have access to an existing research community in this field. You will also be expected to support the development of a shared understanding and knowledge of Learning Gain, and to disseminate this work through participation in seminars and conferences.


The projects should focus on the three specialist areas that currently represent ARU strengths, namely Digital Futures - developing a digitally capable organisation, enabling digital capabilities of staff and students to flourish; Active Learning - including Assessment and Feedback, Inclusive Learning, Teaching and Assessment; and Design Thinking Pedagogy – informing curriculum design and teaching, including incubation of innovations in learning and teaching. This work will support the measuring, evaluating and understanding of learning and teaching practices drawing from a range of appropriate methodologies to achieve different research outcomes.


The research projects should support ARU's strategy stated in Designing our Future 2017-2026 to enhance our students' academic success, satisfaction and employability through transformative education, research and innovation of outstanding quality and impact. The Universities’ research strategy proposes the development of world-leading research outcomes and an international reputation for our work across a number of key strategic themes. Therefore it will be vital that you work with a range of colleagues in developing collaborative and multi-disciplinary research and innovation across and beyond ARU.


The proposed projects should align with the aims of Anglia Ruskin University's Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (RIKE) Strategy 2016-17, in particular RIKE's first aim of a successful submission to the next Research Excellence Framework and the third aim of RIKE which is the exchange of innovation and knowledge exchange. The high quality research environment, as indicated in RIKE aim 2, will ensure timely completion of your PhD and development of key attributes required to further your career.


Your projects should also enrich FHSCE's Research Strategy (2015-20) which includes raising the profile of research in Education and the development of research activity in the area of Pedagogic Research in Higher Education. It is expected that your study will contribute to the REF2020 submission for Unit of Assessment 23 within the key theme of Pedagogic Research in Higher Education.
