Purpose: This seminar has two key purposes. Firstly it will share the findings of a series of exploratory meetings that were funded by the SRHE Donald Bligh fund, which examined the situation of newer researchers in higher education (NRHEs). Secondly it aims to help existing newer researchers locate themselves in relation to the broader academic field of higher education research as well as higher education policy. The aim of the seminar is to identify the possible challenges connected with forging a career in this field of research and the diverse opportunities available.

Audience for the seminar: The seminar is aimed at newer researchers who are working in the sub-field of higher education, but it may also be of interest to supervisors and those researching newer researchers. Each research theme will briefly report on its findings followed by discussion with participants, and by a participant career-related activity. Before the seminar, all participants will be asked to provide brief responses to a short list of questions to help prepare for participation in the event.

12.20-1.00  ‘

1.00-1.40 ‘
Auto-ethnography group’ – the second group sets out to problematise the very concept of NRHEs, presenting narratives from their own diverse experiences to examine this.

1.40-2.20
‘Awards group’ – the third group will start by outlining a study carried out on individuals who won the SRHE Early Career prize, using vignettes to represent typical trajectories, followed by group work to identify sources of support and challenges faced, and reflecting on the implications for NRHEs.

2.20-2.40 Refreshments break

2.40-3.20
‘Policy Group’ – the fourth group will use vignettes & other data showing newer researchers’ level of engagement, or otherwise, with HE policy, drawing on data from a study involving NRHEs in several (mostly European) countries and reflecting on what this means for NRHEs.

3.20-3.30
Brief reflective writing time – each individual will be asked to write down how they see their trajectory, where they hope they are going & what opportunities they identify. They do not need to share this with the group, but keep this for themselves.
