Phenomenography explores variation in the ways individuals experience and understand phenomena in higher education. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the historical development of phenomenography and examine its position within the wider qualitative paradigm. You will become familiar with phenomenographic approaches to generating and analysing data. You will then be invited to work in groups to undertake your own analysis of interview data. Finally, participants will discuss how the results of phenomenographic studies might contribute to more meaningful engagement in higher education.   
 
Mike Mimirinis is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of West London where he leads the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD). His most recent work with Kristina Ahlberg (University of Gothenburg Sweden) explores variation in doctoral students’ conceptions of university teaching (British Educational Research Journal).
