This session is about carrying out a literature review. We will cover what a literature review is and what purposes a literature review serves. We will look at examples of different types of literature review and the epistemological assumptions that lie behind them. We discuss the reporting of a literature review, contrasting narrative with other approaches, and ask what is the difference between a literature review and a conceptual and / or theoretical framework. We will discuss examples of literature review and you will be asked to reflect on the role that literature reviews plays in your own research. The session will be part talk and part group work.

11.30 - 11.45 Small group work: compare and contrast the literature reviews you are undertaking OR describe a review you have read and found useful: what worked well for you?
11.45 – 12.00 Plenary discussion of your experiences
12.00– 12.30 Broadening the notion of a literature review: what is a conceptual framework, a theoretical framework? An interpretive review? Why collecting data before a literature review can sometimes be a good idea?
12.30 – 12.45 Final questions and thoughts on literature review
