Overview

Dr Morag Duffin’s Talk is titled: The role of staff-student collaborative research in facilitating institutional change to address inequitable outcomes in higher education. This session will explore how staff and students can collaborate in research to address inequitable outcomes, taking a case study ULaw’s Diversity and Inclusion Advocates partnership. It will explore the collaborative research projects undertaken by the partnership into discrimination, professional legal assessments and accent and language bias. It will also consider the hierarchies involved in student partnership work as well as how student partners can be involved into putting the research into practice.

Dr Eliza Kozman’s talk is titled: From Paper to Practice: Using EDI Research to Facilitate Institutional Change. Participants will leave with a concise set of takeaways, prompts and implementation tips alongside a network of peers committed to advancing EDI. The overarching aim is to turn evidence into everyday practice, ensuring EDI sits at the forefront of policy, pedagogy and operations across institutions.

Speaker bios

Dr Morag Duffin is the Director of Student Success at The University of Law. Morag is responsible for the University's Access and Participation Plan and wider student success activity focused on student experience and outcomes, specifically in relation to underrepresented groups. Morag is an experienced widening participation specialist with a background in teaching and inclusive learning. Morag has led multiple projects in relation to addressing awarding gaps at The University of Law: a NERUPI project on implementing Culturally Sensitive Curricula Scales; an Ethnicity Degree Awarding Gap Theory of Change project with TASO; and currently the implementation of Dr Paul Campbell’s Racially Inclusive Assessment Practice Guidance on the LLB programme. Dr Eliza Kozman is Deputy Chief Executive at Transforming Access and Student Outcomes (TASO). She oversees all areas of TASO’s work, with a particular focus on research and evaluation activities. Before joining TASO Eliza worked at the Behavioural Insights Team where she designed and implemented research projects with a focus on reducing inequality in education. Eliza holds a PhD from University College London. In her academic work she uses experimental methods to test ways of improving education outcomes for disadvantaged students. Eliza has a strong interest in social mobility and a background in higher education policy. More about Dr Eliza Kozman here.
