Overview

This session is part of Newer Researcher Work in Progress Webinar series. These sessions are open and free for all to attend. SRHE aims to provide a platform to present the most stimulating and innovative research taking place in higher education studies and practice. The Newer Researcher Network recognises the body of exciting research being undertaken by newer and early career researchers and seeks to create a supportive space in which such researchers can present their work-in-progress, receive feedback, and develop connections with national and international peers. Questions and feedback from attendees are warmly welcomed. We aim for this to be a constructive space for work in progress.

Speaker Bios

Joann Cattlin is an Associate Research Fellow within the Social Change Enabling Impact Platform and is in the final stages of her PhD in the School of Global, Urban, and Social Studies at RMIT University, Australia. She undertakes interdisciplinary qualitative, social research through the lens of human information behaviour and information organisation relating to academic culture, research engagement, and societal impact of research. Joann’s research responds to, and seeks to inform, higher education policy, institutional processes, and academic practices relating to societal impact of research. She is Chair of the Oceania Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and was awarded the 2024 ASIS&T Doctoral Proposal Award.

Valentina Carazzolo is a social science researcher whose work focuses on gender inequality in academia and research systems. Her research examines academic careers, structural disparities, and organisational dynamics within higher education, adopting an interdisciplinary and gender-sensitive perspective. She also works on university engagement practices, with particular attention to the evolving relationships between academic institutions and society. She has been involved in national research projects addressing issues of precarity, evaluation mechanisms, gendered career trajectories, and institutional transformation. Her work combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and contributes to ongoing debates on equality, diversity, inclusion, and the social role of universities.
