Overview

\n \n

Twenty years of empirical\, comp assion-focused research - within clinical psycholo gy\, group psychotherapy\, neuroscience and ethnog raphy - have identified that compassion can be acc ompanied by any number of emotions (in many contex ts)\, but its distinct neural pathways evolved as psycho-biological motivation to: notice (no t normalise) the distress or disadvantaging of sel f or others and take wise action to reduce or prev ent that (The Compassionate Mind Foundation). This fostered collaborative teamwork – and our sp ecies survival chances. Today\, within the HE en vironment of competitive individualism\, evidenced -based\, practical micro skills of cognitively com passionate communications are being embedded as cr edit-bearing - along with research skills and crit ical perspectives - in filmed task-focused group/t eam discussions\, e.g. in Business\, Computer Sci ence\, Engineering\, Health\, Medical and Life Sci ences\, Humanities\, and Law. Compared to controls \, studies identify clear enhancements to: \n \n

student-reported mental wellbein g/social connectivity
sustained intercultu ralisation in the classroom
cross team cri tical thinking with statistical significance

In HE\, what does their assessment criteria look like \, how do they design out plagiarism across discip lines\, and why are these criteria now so easy to root into HE teaching\, learning and authentic ass essment in ways authentically address the team wor k skills that employers now prioritise explicitly.

Professor Theo Gilbert\, SFHEA

Professor Theo Gilber t is Professor of Compassion-Focused Pedagogy at t he University of Hertfordshire and a leading exper t on the science of compassion in teamwork and lea dership. His research defines compassion as a p sychobiological motivation—the ability to noti ce distress or disadvantage and take wise action t o reduce it. Drawing on neuroscience\, psychology\ , and anthropology\, Theo’s evidence-based methods for teaching compassion micro-skills have influen ced practice across education\, healthcare\, and g overnment. He is the founder of the Compassion in Higher Education Network\, linking staff fr om over 90 universities worldwide\, and was named Advance HE/Times Higher Education Most Innovati ve Teacher of the Year in 2018. He was keynote speaker at the National Teaching Fellows Annual S ymposium.

Charlotte Bryce is Senior Lecturer and Lead for Postgraduate Programmes at Hertfordsh ire Business School and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. Her teaching and research focus on compassion -focused pedagogy\, postgraduate learning design\, and inclusive leadership. She co-leads the Com passion in Higher Education Network (CiHEN)\, promoting research and practice on compassion micr o-skills in teaching\, supervision\, and organisat ional development. Before entering higher educatio n\, Charlotte held senior roles in the UK communic ations sector\, specialising in customer experienc e and organisational change. She now applies this industry insight to developing human-centred\, sus tainable practices that enhance postgraduate learn ing\, wellbeing\, and employability.
