Overview\n \n
This event explores how human rights can mean ingfully shape AI governance in higher education a nd research. It considers higher education broadly \, including teaching\, learning\, research\, know ledge dissemination and academic work\, and frames the discussion through the "post-AI condition": a n environment shaped by socio-technical\, legal\, political-economic and cultural dynamics in which AI is omnipresent\, policy and regulation struggle to keep pace with Big Tech and Big AI\, and human rights are challenged. The event adopts a human r ights approach to AI governance as a fundamental l ayer through which AI affects universities\, stude nts\, academics\, researchers and democratic knowl edge systems. Contributions address academic labou r and procurement governance\, public AI and the r ights to science and education\, data privacy and citizens' agency\, and the role of higher educatio n institutions in shaping accountable AI.

Janja Komljenovic\, Univ ersity of Edinburgh. Janja Komljenovic is Senior Lec turer in Education Futures at the University of Ed inburgh. Her research focuses on the political eco nomy of higher education and the digitalisation\, datafication and platformisation of universities\, intersecting economic sociology\, science and tec hnology studies\, and higher education research. S he has published internationally on higher educati on policy\, higher education markets and education al technology\, consults on international higher e ducation policy projects\, serves as an evaluator for national quality assurance agencies\, and is a member of committees within international organis ations. She directs the MSc Digital Education at t he University of Edinburgh and is a Coordinating E ditor for Higher Education.

Ayça Atabey\, University of Edin burgh. Ayça Atabey is a lawyer and multidisciplinary researcher working on AI governance and human-cen tred design of AI with a focus on data and human r ights of children and young people. She is a certi fied data privacy and management expert in the EU and UK. She currently works as a post-doctoral res earcher at the University of Edinburgh\, at the in tersection of data protection law\, education and human-computer interaction\, focusing on fairness and ethical data practices in AI-EdTech design. Sh e has worked with NGOs\, international organisatio ns and research institutions\, including UN Women\ , Council of Europe\, 5Rights Foundation\, Digital Futures for Children centre\, LSE and Alan Turing Institute\, most recently focusing on co-designin g responsible GenAI practices for and with student s and rights-respecting AI regulation.

Klaus D. Beiter\, Nor th-West University. Klaus D. Beiter is a Research Pr ofessor in the Faculty of Law at North-West Univer sity. He holds law degrees from the University of South Africa and a doctorate in international huma n rights law from the University of Munich. He has taught International Human Rights Law\, Intellect ual Property Law\, Socio-Economic Rights and Inter national Social Justice in Germany\, the UK and So uth Africa. His research focuses on the right to s cience\, academic/scientific freedom\, the right t o education\, IP law and creators' rights\, and la w and development. He is a member of the South Afr ican Academy of Science and an ad hoc consultant t o UNESCO and the UN Human Rights Council.

Aída Pon ce Del Castillo\, European Trade Union Institute. Aí da Ponce Del Castillo is a lawyer and bioethicist and a senior researcher at the European Trade Unio n Institute in Brussels. Her research focuses on s cience\, emerging technologies and governance\, wi th particular attention to ethical\, social and le gal implications. She leads foresight projects on the future of work and technological transformatio n\, examining how technological systems are transl ated into governance and how they shape working co nditions\, decision-making and accountability. She is a member of the committee for Belgium's Nation al Convergence Plan for the Development of AI and participates in OECD working parties on biotechnol ogy\, nanotechnology\, converging technologies and AI governance.
