Overview

\n \n

This 3-hour webinar will showcase research on virt ual international student mobilities\, i.e. forms of international student mobility where students e nrol on online distance education programmes outsi de their home countries instead of physically trav elling abroad. The first session will bring togeth er papers focused on a range of national contexts\ , which will question the equality assumptions in virtual student mobilities\, through highlighting existing ways that such mobilities are inherently unequal and potentially risk further marginalisati on\; examine the political economy of such interna tionalisation\; and explore students’ experiences of educational mobility without movement. In the s econd session\, we will hear research findings fro m an Open Research Area-funded project on virtual international student mobilities to the UK\, Franc e\, and Canada. The session will focus on the poli cy rationales underpinning online distance learnin g provision in these three countries. Both session s will include comments from discussants and Q&A.< /span>

Dr Ahmad Akkad is a Research Associate in the Department of Education at the University of Bath and an Honorary Research Fellow and College Advisor in the Department of E ducation at the University of Oxford. He is co-lea ding the Global Observatory on Academic Freedom (G OAF) at King’s College London (KCL). He is a Co-Co nvenor of the Diary Method Community and the Highe r Education Research Group at KCL. Ahmad’s researc h interests span international higher education\, particularly in conflict contexts\, doctoral educa tion\, academic mobility\, displacement\, and dias pora. Ahmad has taught on the MA Global Education and International Development at the University o f Warwick and has lectured at Oxford\, KCL\, and i n Syria. He has also collaborated with internation al organisations and charities\, including UN-supp orted NGOs\, to promote refugee education across E urope and in conflict-affected contexts.

Dr Jenna Mittelmeier is a Senior Lecture r in International Education at the University of Manchester. Her research expertise focuses broadly on the internationalisation of higher education a nd more specifically on the treatment of internati onal students. She is the lead co-editor of the re cently published book Research with Internation al Students: Critical Conceptual and Methodologica l Considerations. She also co-founded and is t he lead organiser for the Research with Internatio nal Students (RIS) network\, and is a founding co- editor of the Journal of Global Higher Education.< /span>

Dr Jonathan Par is is a post doctoral fellow in education at Université TÉLUQ ( Canada). He is a member of the Interdisciplinary L aboratory for Research on Higher Education (LIRES) and the Interuniversity Research Centre on Teache r Education and the Teaching Profession (CRIFPE). His research focuses on developing an explanatory model of persistence among international students enrolled in distance higher education programs. He is also interested in teaching practices in highe r education\, particularly within digital and onli ne learning environments. Through his work\, he ai ms to better understand the factors that support s tudent success and to inform the design of inclusi ve and effective pedagogical approaches in remote education contexts.

~~~~Dr Magali Ballatore~~~~ is a Senior Lecturer (m aitresse de conferences) in Sociology at the Unive rsité Aix-Marseille. She is researcher at Mesopolh is – UMR 7064\, member of SFERE. Associate researc her at GIRSEF-UCL\, Belgium – at CEREQ and at the Laboratory of Economics and Sociology of Work UMR 7317 CNRS. Her expertise lies in comparative educa tion\, with a specific focus on the confluence of education studies and migration studies. She has p ublished a well-known book on Erasmus\, and repres ented France on the Management Committee for the E U COST ACTION "European Network on International S tudent Mobility" for the period 2021-2025. She is also member of the UNI-T project. She possesses a deep understanding of European comparative analyse s related to mobility\, HE policies\, and highly s killed migration. Concerning Virmobs project\, wit h Valérie Erlich\, she supervises and contributes to all tasks and activities at French level.

Dr Mariia Tishenina recently completed a PhD in Educational R esearch at Edge Hill University\, UK\, and brings over a decade of professional experience in intern ational education. She holds an MSc in Comparative and International Education from the University o f Oxford and an MSc in Fundamental and Applied Lin guistics from Voronezh State University. Her resea rch interests include the socio-cultural aspects o f human action\, students’ self-formation and subj ectification\, and the internationalisation and di gital transformation of higher education.

Dr Mariya Ivancheva is a sociologist and anthropologist of highe r education and labour at Strathclyde Institute of Education\, whose research and engaged scholarshi p focuses on topics of labour in education and hig h-skilled sectors. Her most recent work addresses the questions how digitalisation\, outsourcing and AI-driven automation are restructuring academic l abour and identities\; the implications of AI for intersectional and global inequalities\; and the r ole of universities in responding large-scale poli tical\, urban and technological transformation. Sh e is the author of the monograph The Alternativ e University: Lessons from Bolivarian Venezuela (Stanford UP 2025) and co-author of the edited c ollection Educating Otherwise: Contexts\, Inter ventions and Radical Possibilities of Anthropologi cal Learning (Berghahn 2026).

Dr Olivier Bégin-Caouette \, Ph.D.\, is an Associate Professor of Compara tive Higher Education in the Department of Adminis tration and Foundations of Education at the Univer sité de Montréal. He also holds the Canada Researc h Chair in Comparative and International Higher Ed ucation (CRC-ESCI). He is a co-founder and directo r of the Interdisciplinary Research Lab on Higher Education (LIRES) and an associate member of the I nteruniversity Research Center on Science and Tech nology (CIRST). His research focuses on the intera ctions between higher education systems and their political\, economic\, social\, and cultural conte xts\, as well as on the production of academic res earch and the internationalization of higher educa tion.

She is interested in the geographies of skills and education and how this shapes mobility and immobility. She is Chair of th e Executive Board of IMISCOE\, the largest network of scholars in the field of migration and integra tion.

Dr Sazana Jayadeva is a Lecturer in Sociology at t he University of Surrey. She is an Associate Edito r of the journal Sociology and co-convenes the Soc iety for Research into Higher Education's Internat ional Research and Researchers’ Network. She is al so affiliated with the GIGA Institute of Asian Stu dies in Germany as an Associate Researcher. Dr Théotime Chabre is a postd octoral in political sociology at Aix-Marseille Un iversity and a Fellow of the Institut Convergences Migration (Collège de France). Based on extensive fieldwork in Türkiye\, Cyprus and Mauritius\, his research examines how peripheral and contested te rritories become international destinations throug h the intersection of higher education\, residenti al tourism\, migration\, and state-building. More broadly\, he is interested in the governance of mo bility\, service industries dedicated to foreigner s\, and the production of "desirable" migrants in border territories. Since 2018\, he has taught pol itical science and international relations at Scie nces Po Paris\, Sciences Po Aix and Cote d'Azur Un iversity. He co-organises the seminar "Privilege M igrations" at EHESS since 2021. His current resear ch investigates comparative dynamics of distance i nternational higher education policies in France\, the United-Kingdom and Canada.
