Overview
\n \nIn this seminar\, Ka te Black will present findings from a recent Journ al of Management Education paper writtern with Russell Warhurst < /span>exploring the use of an authentic experiential learning exercise\, N orthern Skies Coffee\, designed to provide a workp lace-equivalent learning experience in the classro om.
\n \n < p>The seminar will b e of interest to researchers\, academic developers \, and educators seeking innovative approaches to employability\, experiential learning\, and curric ulum design. It will also provide an opportunity t o reflect on the broader role of higher education in preparing graduates for increasingly complex an d uncertain workplaces.

\n \nProfessor Kate Black is Associate Head of Scho ol and Professor of Management Learning and Educat ion at Newcastle Business School\, Northumbria Uni versity. Her research focuses on workplace learnin g\, professional identity\, and the experiences of being and becoming a professional within contempo rary organisations. She is particularly interested in informal learning\, intergenerational knowledg e exchange\, and higher education pedagogy\, inclu ding student engagement and students-as-partners a pproaches. Kate is a Principal Fellow of the Highe r Education Academy (PFHEA)\, a Certified Manageme nt and Business Educator (CMBE)\, and co-Chair of the British Academy of Management’s Management Kno wledge and Education community. Her work draws on innovative qualitative and visual research methods and contributes to debates about learning\, ident ity\, and academic practice in higher education an d professional settings.

At the same time\, o pportunities for placements and internships—which are often seen as the gold standard for employabil ity development—are becoming less accessible for m any students. This raises an important question fo r higher education: how can universities provide m eaningful employability learning experiences withi n the curriculum itself? \n \n \n \n In this semin ar\, Kate Black will present findings from a recen t Journal of Management Education paper writtern w ith Russell Warhurst exploring the use of an authe ntic experiential learning exercise\, Northern Ski es Coffee\, designed to provide a workplace-equiva lent learning experience in the classroom. \n \n \ n \n Drawing on evaluation data from students and instructors\, the session will examine how authent ic learning experiences can support the developmen t of key employability capabilities\, including cr eativity\, critical thinking\, teamwork\, negotiat ion\, and subject knowledge.
