Professor Mike Neary has been the Dean of Teaching and Learning at the University of Lincoln since 2007. Before taking up his post at Lincoln he taught Political Sociology at the University of Warwick (1994 - 2007). Prior to becoming an academic Mike worked in youth and community education in South London (1980-1994). His current research interests are academic labour and student life. Recent publications include ‘Teaching Politically: Policy, Pedagogy and the new European University’ and ‘Occupy: A New Pedagogy of Space and Time?’ with Sarah Amsler, both published in the Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies 2013. He jointly edited a collection of essays Teaching in Public: Making the Modern University ( 2012), and is currently writing a book to be published by Zero Books next year: Student as Producer: How Do Revolutionary Teachers Teach? In 2007 he was given a national award for his teaching by the Higher Education Academy, a UK government agency that supports teaching in universities. He is a founder member of the Social Science Centre, Lincoln.

“Student as Producer: Radicalising Curriculum Development and Institutional Change in Higher Education.”

Student as Producer is the organising principle for teaching and learning at the University of Lincoln, UK. This means incorporating student research as a key aspect of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum so that students become and part of the academic project and culture of the University. Mike will outline the ways in which this principle is embedded across the University of Lincoln, as well as the critical theoretical ideas on which Student as Producer is based. At the core of Student as Producer lies the ambition not simply to improve the student experience, but to transform the university as a radical political project.
