Biography

Linda Evans is professor of leadership and professional learning at the University of Leeds School of Education. Spanning both the compulsory and the higher education sectors, her research focuses on professional working life, including: professionalism and professional development; morale, job satisfaction and motivation; and leadership and management. She has authored five books, including Teaching and learning in higher education (1998, published by Cassell), and numerous articles and chapters. Her first edited book (with Jon Nixon), Academic identities in higher education: The changing European landscape was published by Bloomsbury in 2015. She is an associate editor of the journal, Educational Management, Administration and Leadership, and between 2010 and 2013 was editor-in-chief of The International Journal for Researcher Development.

A former student of European studies and modern foreign languages, Linda remains a fluent German and French speaker and has a wide network of European colleagues, frequently engages with francophone researchers and presents her work in French. In 2011 she lived in Lyon, as visiting professor at l’Institut Français de l’Education, within the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon.

Linda is a vice-chair of the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) and the founding convenor of the SRHE’s International Research and Researchers’ network. She is frequently in demand as a speaker and has presented keynote and plenary addresses many times in the UK and overseas – including in Australia, Portugal, France, Germany and Mauritius. She recently acted as consultant to the University of Mauritius on revising its academic promotions policies, procedures and criteria. A displaced Mancunian, she is a lifelong Manchester United supporter. In what little leisure time she gives herself, she enjoys the theatre, visiting historic buildings, and reading about medieval and Tudor history.
