HEFCE is also monitoring progression into research study in the UK and published two reports in September, one highlighting the undergraduate funding system and the postgraduate taught level as factors, and the other on internationally comparative research on quality, access and employment outcomes in taught and research postgraduate education. Gill Clarke (UKCGE and University of Oxford), as co-author of one of the reports, will explore the research study dimension in comparison to the taught level.
The final session of the seminar will invite a short response to the previous sessions from a representative of a study body, followed by a discussion with the speakers as a panel. In light of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's 2014 Autumn Statement plan to extend the student loan scheme selectively to taught Master's study, and with the General Election imminent, the background discussion questions will be:
- what policy on funding will support fair access to postgraduate taught and research study? and
- what system will be sustainable, to ensure adequate student numbers and the health of UK universities?
