Call for Nominations for SRHE Governing Council
Term of office: 1 January 2022 – December 31 2024
Closing date for Nominations: 21st September 2021
The Society invites applications from members of the Society to join their Governing Council as an elected Trustee and contribute to the Society’s mission, governance, and strategic forward planning. Appointments will be for an elected term of office of three years, 1 January 2022 – December 31 2024.
Elected members of Council are eligible to stand for re-election for a second or third term of three years up to a maximum three consecutive three-year terms of office.
Supporting a Learned Society in this way brings many personal rewards and benefits. Working alongside professional colleagues, all engaged in different aspects of higher education, you will be responsible for setting the Society’s objectives and steering their delivery. Working collegially with fellow Trustees, supported by a small executive team of highly experienced and accomplished professionals, develops and reinforces leadership skills and an understanding of what is involved in running an independent, not-for-profit business.
The Society is seeking Trustees who will bring new skills and perspectives, widening the range of knowledge and experience on which the Society can draw. The Society is keen to enhance diversity of representation in its Governing Council and membership and welcomes engagement with this process from individuals from underrepresented groups and backgrounds.
The Society has a particular need to provide longer term succession for the role of Treasurer and would therefore be pleased to receive interest from individuals with relevant financial skills and experience. Legal knowledge, especially in relation to charity law, would also be valuable.
This is an exciting time at which to get involved with the Society at this level. The Society has a sound financial base and commands a high reputation for its many and varied academic programmes, conferences, events, and professional development programmes. The Society also has a strong portfolio of academic publications.
We are looking for individuals with the energy, drive, and vision to support the Society in a variety of ways; forging relationships within the higher education sector, developing a wider engagement with policy matters, advising on new ways in which the Society can continue to support and sustain an international community of researchers in higher education, and providing guidance on how the Society can expand our spheres of influence and increasingly be of value to our members and beyond.
SRHE Governing Council members are also Trustees of the Society, registered with the Charity Commission, and this requires a significant level of commitment. This includes attending three Council meetings per calendar year. It also requires the full engagement of Council members in bringing their skills and experience to bear to ensure strong governance of the Society and full compliance with its charitable objectives throughout the elected term of office of three years.
Governing Council members are also required to serve on at least one of the following four Standing Committees: Publications, Research & Development, Management & Finance, and Governance & Appointments. These standing committees also meet three times a year.
