Overview
The beneficial links between research and teaching and advocacy for the integration of research into teaching has been of sustained global interest to universities and higher education institutes for over thirty years. Levels of interest and approaches have shifted in response to a dynamic and complex set of drivers and obstacles. These are linked to ideas about the types of learning and knowledge higher education graduates will need for our global society as evident in the promotional, strategy and policy documents. In response academics seek to integrate research into their teaching to continually reframe and in cases, defend their approach in light of the needs of contemporary society and to consider how their approach relates to pedagogical shifts towards student centred learning and student partnerships in learning design. The new opportunities that unfold, as well as tensions that have emerged and will need to be addressed are the focus of this seminar. Our four speakers will share the perspectives from staff members and students engaged in research-teaching integration from various higher education institutions from across the globe. First, Hannah Mülder (University of Oslo) will present on student as partners navigating their dual role as students and co-leaders of research or educational innovation projects using qualitative methods and social network analysis. Lucia Ravi (University of Western Australia) explores how different views of purpose for choosing to integrate research may shape pedagogical decision making. Then, Jingwen Wu (University of Southampton) will talk about undergraduate student experiences of different RTN types and their relationships with student beliefs of the RTN importance in China and the UK. Lastly, Sanne Daas (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) will present findings from her research into the various reasonings of employees within universities of applied sciences for their behaviour in connecting research and education.
