Publishing academic articles: a way through the maze

The programme is aimed at Newer Researchers, researching in the field of Higher Education, but will also be beneficial to a broader audience.
This will be an interactive session which will cover
• the mechanics of getting published IN JOURNALS – covering preparation and research through to peer-review and post-publication
• How to choose the right journal in which to publish considering that there IS now such a multitude
• Working with other people; gaining and using their feedback (collaborators, critical friends, reviewers)
• Identifying the differences between writing for journals and other forms of writing with which you may be more familiar
Ian McNay is Professor Emeritus, Higher Education and Management at the University of Greenwich, after a career in several European countries embracing teaching, research, policy advice, institution managment and consultancy. He edited Research into Higher Education Abstracts for over 15 years until 2012, on behalf of SRHE, so has read a lot of articles. He reviews for 7 HE journals, and several book publishers, so he has read a lot of drafts; and has over 120 publications to his name, so he has written quite a few.
Ian White has been working in the academic journal publishing industry since 1994. Currently responsible for journal commissioning and management with Routledge/Taylor & Francis, Ian was previously an Editor working on Geographical Abstracts: H uman Geography whilst with Elsevier. He joined Taylor & Francis in 1998, and has worked on their education journals programme ever since. Ian includes two of the SRHE’s journals in his current management portfolio.
