For many people giving a presentation is a scary prospect so many newer researchers have requested a course to help them develop presentation skills and gain more confidence. September is an apt time for such a course: before the beginning of the academic term for those of you who need to make presentations in a wide variety of situations such as seminars and particularly useful for those who are presenting at the SRHE Newer Researchers Conference in December. This course is very hands-on and will, through practical exercises, help boost your confidence. It will be fun, with lots of tips and strategies on how to calm your nerves, develop your presentation materials and to increase the impact you can make on your audience. The group will be small in order to give you individual attention and to allow you to practise using video and feedback.

You must come prepared to give a 15 minute presentation. PowerPoint facilities will be available if you bring your presentation on a USB stick and/or you can use a flipchart or simply give a verbal presentation with or without visual aids that you bring with you.

Since the idea is to gain feedback from both experts and your peers it is essential that each participant does give a presentation and provides feedback to others. You will also learn how to provide effective and constructive feedback to others here and at conferences and seminars.

Quotations from researchers who have attended this course:

“Beforehand I was very nervous but it was one of the best courses I have ever attended and will help me for the rest of my career.”

“I almost chickened out of attending this course but now I would like to do it again in a year’s time to show how much I have learnt and to improve more.”
