A deeper understanding of environmental factors in institutions is vital in effectively addressing any concerns about research integrity, especially in the light of the recent UUK Concordat to support research integrity which is likely to lead to more rigorous reporting and compliance requirements. The aim of this project is to gather data on the current state of awareness and the development of research integrity in training and support programmes across the UK HEI sector. The aim is to design training events, materials and resources for more effective embedding of research integrity support. We are also attempting to find practical ways in which engagement with integrity training can be improved.

This session will provide an overview of the context of, impetus for, and initial stages of this research and offer the opportunity to provide input into the project.

Speakers:

Fiona Denney is Assistant Director of the Graduate School at Kings College London with responsibility for graduate development. Prior this position, she worked in a similar role at Queen Mary, University of London; and as a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Staffordshire University. She has led many training courses at a number of UK universities, has been invited to speak at several national conferences and writes regular articles in this area. Fiona is keen to see researchers developing integrity in their approach to research.

Andrew Rawnsley has worked as a lecturer and research fellow (University of St Andrews;  KU Leuven, Belgium; St Martin’s University, USA) and is currently Research Governance & Training Manager at Teesside University, where he is responsible for management and training in research ethics and integrity. Frequent external consultancy and training includes for the universities of Aberdeen, Bath, Manchester, Kingston, Roehampton, and York.  He serves on the Executive Committee of the UK Council for Graduate Education (current tenure from 2010-2014) and is active in other UK and regional networks and organisations such as AREC. He is a co-author for Epigeums’ newly released “Research Integrity Online” course, along with four US-based authors.
