Presented by Dr Mark J.P. Kerrigan (Head of Learning, Teaching and Enchancement and Online Learning, SOAS) and Dr Iain Cross (Associate Professor in Education Development, LSHTM).
Please note: This is a hands-on workshop with interactive activities and participants will be required to bring a laptop.
Overview:
The aim of this session is to explore AI and the current thoughts, practice, and applications in higher education research. Specifically, it will be divided into three sessions whereby:
Part 1: Exploration of AI and current thinking in HE and research
Part 2: Hands-on workshop on how to construct simple and complex AI prompts to support the creation of a piece of text including critical reflection and limitations. Participants can either work on scoping a piece of current work or explore a new research thematic.
Part 3: Hands-on workshop on using a series of different AI tools to (1) support decision making in constructing a literature review dataset and (2) the construction of a research communication output.
Schedule

SRHE welcome and housekeeping |
10.35-11.10 |
Exploration of AI and current thinking related to research in higher education. This will include thoughts and discussion on (1) ethics of the tools (general), (2) ethics and impact of using AI in research (intellectual + boundaries), (3) accountability and responsibility of what is produced, (4) current limitations and future opportunities. |
11.10 – 12.30 |
SEARCHING: using a general LLM model: In this hands-on part of the workshop, participants will explore and be supported on how to construct simple and complex AI prompts and use these for the creation of a piece of text including critical reflection and limitations. Participants can either work on scoping a piece of current work or explore a new research thematic. Additionally, ‘AI conversations’ will be explored as an approach to support thinking around a research area. |
12.30 – 13.00 |
Show case of the previous session including reflections and sharing of practice. |
13.00-13.45 |
Lunch & networking |
13.45-14.45 |
SEARCH and CREATE: using specific AI tools: In this hands-on part of the workshop participants will explore and be supported on using a series of different AI tools to (1) support decision making in constructing a literature review dataset and (2) the construction of a research communication output. Specific tools will include (1) https://elicit.com, (2) Notebook LLM and (3) an AI poster/infographic tool. |
14.45 – 15.15 |
Show case of the previous session including reflections and sharing of practice |
15.15 – 15.30 |
Reflection & close |
At the end of the session a successful participant will be able to:
- Discuss AI and current trends in higher education with a focus on research, ethics, data security and academic integrity.
- Create complex ChatGPT prompts to inform the development of a research thematic.
- Apply a series of AI tools to support the creation of research outputs.
- Reflect on personal AI literacy and professional development.
