Overview:
This online event is aimed at colleagues who are carrying out, and/or want to carry out research but are not on research-focused contracts. Through a series of presentations and discussions, the session will support attendees to develop research ideas and share practice. Drawing on their insights and experiences, the presenters will illustrate how it is possible to contribute to research spaces as researchers on non-research focused contracts. Attendees will be provided with guidance on how to get the most out of limited time allocations and resources to do research/scholarship.

Speaker bios
Dr Rupert Knight: After a brief period in educational publishing, Rupert Knight’s journey as an educator began in earnest as a teacher in schools in London and Nottingham. He has since worked in HE for 18 years at two universities, initially in teacher education and subsequently in gradually more diverse roles. Rupert currently works at the University of Nottingham on teacher education and other postgraduate education courses, including PGCHE, MA and PhD. Rupert has worked on a range of publications for both practitioner and academic audiences, ranging from journal articles and books to blogs. He is the knowledge exchange lead for the School of Education and is involved in professional development and KE projects with local schools. Rupert’s research interests include the role of oracy/spoken language/dialogic pedagogies in education and all forms of teacher education.
Dr Charlie Davis is co-convenor for the Newer Research Network and works in the School of Education at the University of Nottingham. He works across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School. Charlie has been working in higher education since 2009 as a learning technologist, academic developer and academic. Prior to this, he spent eight years teaching English to speakers of other languages. Charlie’s research focuses on inclusion in higher education, particularly the experiences of under-represented social groups. His work mobilises creative co-production methods in inquiry spaces to support participants represent their lived experiences on their terms through situating their life histories as sites of critique and analysis. Charlie won the SRHE Newer Researcher Award in 2021, which funded his project, Academics of Working-Class Heritage: a participatory critical storytelling project with Russell Group academics.
Dr Charlotte Verney is Head of Assessment at the University of Bristol. Charlotte is a professional services leader in higher education, and an early career researcher, having completed an EdD in 2022. Her primary research interests are in the changing nature of administrative work within universities, using research approaches to solve professional problems in higher education management, and using creative and collaborative approaches to research. Charlotte advocates for making the academic research space more inclusive for early career and professional services researchers. She is co-convenor of the SRHE Newer Researchers Network and has established an online network for higher education professional services staff engaged with research. She is currently leading a QAA funded project on the future of exam boards, and co-leading a project at the University of Bristol support professional services researchers.
