Harriet Croft was the first Administrator of SRHE (1969-72) and served on the Governing Council for 15 years of which five years were as Vice-Chair. During that time she undertook research in the field of staff development and graduate employment. She assembled the Register of British and European Research in Higher Education which paved the way for subsequent volumes. In the 1990s she represented SRHE in organising national conferences on further and higher education collaboration. She was Academic Registrar of Bristol Polytechnic and then Head of External Awards and Research Administration at the University of the West of England. She retired early in 1997 and moved to North Devon in 2004 where she volunteered for the National Trust for 20 years.
