After (ill-advised) degree in Minerals Engineering, serendipitously became research assistant, later research officer, in the higher education research unit at LSE (1967-70). Jointly established Centre for Institutional Studies (later became Director) at NE London Polytechnic (now University) 1970; appointed professor 1988, retired 2001. Researched extensively on non-university education, including policy reviews in Austria and Finland for OECD, but failed to stop UK polytechnics becoming universities (succeeded in Austria and Finland); edited Higher Education Review (1977-2012). Member of SRHE R and D committee (dates?) and chair of (Date?) Conference. Lifelong athlete, marathon runner, still trying.
